The Apartment

Located at Design Within Reach’s flagship retail store, The Apartment is a replica of a two-story room apartment showcasing products. Language Dept. was responsible for the curation of an immersive experience that would also encourage customers to learn more about the unique techniques involved in the design of products. Playing on perspective, the rooms were transformed into an interactive space relying on the curious inquiry of customers to figure out which pieces were digitally vs. hand crafted.

I assisted with conceptualizing an installation inspired by anamorphosis, a perspective technique where seemingly abstract shapes resolve into a clear image from a vantage point. DWR’s bright red was applied to large sections of the room and directly onto the furniture to encourage touch and highlight subtle differences in surface textures. A designated vantage point served as a photo op. Here, viewers could see a perfect red frame form and share their perspective amongst each other by tagging #DWR57 on social media. I also designed a gallery map poster to help customers easily locate and identify products and their designers.
